'산타 에비타'로 불리는 에바 페론 (1919-1952) 아르헨티나의 시골 가난한 농부의 사생아로 태어난 Maria Eva Duarte (에바 두아루떼), 설움을 참기 어려워 부에노스 아이레스로 향한후 자신의 미모를 밑천으로 삼류 술집의 댄서로 일하다 자신의 나이보다 두배나 되는 후안 페론 육군 대령을 정략적으로 만나게 된다. 1946년 후안 페론의 민중혁명으로 대통 령이되자 에바 페론은 당당히 퍼스트 레이디가 된다. 빈민구제 복지재단등을 설립 지지기반 확보와 아르헨티나의 국민들의 사랑속에 승승장구하며 부통령자리를 탐하다 군부의 반대로 좌절되면서 아르헨티나의 국민들이 서서히등을 돌리고 자신은 1952년 33세의 나이로 자궁암으로 세상을 타계한 입지전적인 인물 - 에바 페론의 일대기를 뮤직컬의 천재 앤드류 로이드 웨버(사라 브라트만 전 남편)가 만든 작품. 에바페론을 평가하자면, 먼저 대중인기 영합주의인 페로니즘을 거론하지 않을 수 없다. 후안 페론의 정치적 노선인 페로니즘은 사실상 부인인 에바 페론의 영향이 컸다. 노동조건 개선과 임금 인상으로 노동자 계층은 페론정권을 전폭적으로 지지했고, 자본주의도 공산주의도 아닌 소위 제3의 길을 추구했다. 특히 분배의 정의에 치중하여 연간 20 %를 넘게 임금인상을 시켰는데, 사실 이와 같은 포퓰리즘은 사실상 독재체제를 강화해 나가는 수단에 불과했다. 뮤지칼과 영화로 미화된 이면과는 달리 현실은 실제로 지금도 냉엄하다. 아르헨티나가 페론집권 이전에는 당시 세계 5대 부국중 하나였다. 그러나 페론 정권의 이와 같은 지나친 재정지출 확대, 무분별한 임금인상, 그리고 이어진 연이은 쿠테타 등으로 아르헨티나는 국가경쟁력을 잃고 1985년 남미 경제위기의 시발점이 되는 등 아직도 경제난이 심각하다. 이와 같이 객관적으로는 에바 페론과 이로 대표되는 페로니즘, 포퓰리즘은 부정 적인 평가를 받고 있지만, 아직도 아르헨티나의 많은 국민들은 그녀를 진정으로 노동자와 국민을 사랑한 지도자로, 성녀로 생각하며 추앙한다고 한다. 영화속에 나오는 체 게바라는(안토니오 반데라스) 실제는 에바와 서로 알지 못하는 사이이다.        Academy Awards(1997) Won : Oscar for Best Music, Original Song /Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) Tim Rice (lyrics) For the song "You Must Love Me". "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"는 1978년에 초연된 뮤지칼 'Evita'(music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice)의 가장 잘 알려진 곡으로 원제는 "It's Only Your Lover Returning" 이었으나 나중 이것으로 정착되었다. 1976년 studio version으로 Julie Covington에 의해 녹음된 것이 최초이고, 1978년 6월21일 런던의 프린스 에드워드 극장(Prince Edward Theatre)에서 뮤지칼이 무대에서 초연 될 때는 Elaine Paige에 의해 불려졌다. 영화 Evita(1996)에서 Madonna 에 의해 불려지고 이후 the Carpenters, Olivia Newton- John, the Shadows (1978), Joan Baez (1980), Donna Summer (1981) 그리고 Sinéad O'Connor(1992), Sarah Brightman and Mike Flowers Pops (1996), 그외 수개국의 언어로 많은 다른 가수들에 의해 불려졌다.
