Plot Summary
In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American and former freedom fighter,
runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the
possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in
Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him,
including detaining Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick's surprise,
Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Rick's one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who
ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run
off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan...

제 2 차 세계 대전중, 아프리카 북단에 위치한, 프랑스 령 이었던 모로코의 항구 도시
Casablanca - 당시 프랑스 본토는 이미 독일에게 함락되고 각 열강들의 각축장 같았던
이곳은 미국으로 피난을 가려는 수많은 유럽인들에게 경유지로 몰려오던 요충지였다.
그런 이곳에서 Rick Blaine은 카페를 운영하는 미스테리에 쌓인 냉소적인 미국인이다.
어느날 밤, 레지스탕스의 리더인 Laszlo와 그의 아내 Ilsa가 릭의 카페로 찾아온다. 이들
부부는 릭에게 여권을 부탁하러 온 참이었는데 일자를 본 릭은 깜짝 놀란다..꿈같던 파리
시절, 릭과 일자는 사랑을 나누던 사이, 잊혀졌던 불꽃이 일자와 릭의 가슴을 뒤 흔든다.
이들 사연을 아는 피아노 연주자인 Sam은 두 사람의 추억의 곡을 연주하여 이들이 놀라게
한다.
이루지 못한 옛 사랑 일자를 붙잡아 두고 픈 생각에 번민하던 릭, 처음엔 냉대하던
쫓기는 몸인 라즐로에게 일자가 절실히 필요함을 알고 이들을 도울 결심을 한다. 릭은
끈질긴 나치의 눈을 피하여 경찰 서장 Renault를 구슬러 두사람의 패스포트를 준비한다.
이윽고 이별의 시간이 오고 온갖 착잡한 마음을 뒤로하고 릭과 일자는 서로를 응시한 채
일자는 트랩을 오르고 릭은 사라지는 비행기를 한 동안 바라본다.
1920년대에 미국으로 건너온 항가리출신 감독 Michael Curtiz, 배우 Humphrey Bogart와
Ingrid Bergman 의 카리스마넘치는 명연기, 영화 'Gone with the Wind'의 음악을 맡았던
영화음악의 거장 Max Steiner가 함께 만든 작품으로 "American Film Institute"가 2000년
선정한 "위대한 영화 100선"에서 '시민 케인'(Citizen Kane/1941)다음으로 2위에 랭크
되었다.
아카데미-작품, 감독, 각색의 3개 부문을 수상하였다(8개 부문 후보).
후에 칼라로 복원되었다.
삽입된 Herman Hupfield의 'As Time Goes By'는 흑인 피아니스트 Dooley Wilson(Sam
으로 粉)이 연주하면서 노래부르는 장면과 여러 스타일로 변주된 멜로디로 여러 장면에서
반복하여 들리는데 영화의 성공과 함께 전 세계적인 팝의 고전명곡이 되었다.
